House of the Dragon

Much like buying a sailboat or getting a PhD, getting into House of the Dragon isn't something you do on a whim. You don't just stumble into Westeros for a casual episode. If you're watching this, you've already completed eight seasons of Game of Thrones, memorized family trees, and accepted that Googling dragon power rankings is now part of your weekly routine.

Set nearly 200 years before Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon follows House Targaryen at the height of its power as a dispute over the Iron Throne slowly escalates into a dragon-fueled civil war.

Let's get this out of the way: House of the Dragon is not Game of Thrones. Game of Thrones was a buffet. Politics. Adventure. White Walkers. Arya and the Hound. House of the Dragon is one very fancy meal: the most powerful family in Westeros tearing itself apart with twenty bloody dragons.

The series takes one of the bloodiest chapters in Targaryen history and turns it into a slow-motion family implosion. Only in Westeros could your best friend become your stepmother, your uncle become your husband, and a child's hair color threaten the stability of the realm. At the center of season one is Paddy Considine's King Viserys, literally disintegrating in front of our eyes as he desperately tries to stop his family from tearing itself apart. It ain't easy. His grandkids are stealing each other's dragons, cutting each other's eyes out, and starting blood feuds before they're old enough to shave. Oh – and there's the question of whether your brother slept with your daughter… It's all very Westerosi.

But nobody comes here for healthy family dynamics. They come for the dragons. And boy do they deliver. The aerial battles are essentially Top Gun with flying reptiles. Dragons burst through cloud cover, dive-bomb armies, and tear each other apart hundreds of feet above the battlefield. When the action hits the ground, things get ugly fast. Castles burn. Soldiers evaporate. Entire battlefields turn into medieval horror shows. Add in enough scheming, betrayals, and Daemon Targaryen doing whatever the hell Daemon Targaryen feels like doing that week, and you've got the kind of epic, appointment television HBO built its reputation on.

Sunday rolls around and you start checking the clock. When the theme song hits, you're right back in Westeros – goosebumps, bumping. Very few shows still generate that weekly thrill. House of the Dragon does.

Season three is almost here, and the civil war the show has spent two seasons building toward finally looks ready to explode. Get caught up. Dragons are coming.
